At least 25 people were killed and 45 others injured in powerful suicide blasts in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Monday. Agence France-Presse (AFP) chief photographer Shah Marai and five other journalists were among the people killed in the blast.
All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where some of them were in critical condition, Afghanistan local media quoted Health Ministry spokesperson Wahid Majroh as saying.
The spokesperson feared that the death toll was likely to go up as some of the injured were battling with life in a critical condition in hospital.
Islamic State has claimed the responsibility of the twin blasts that took place in an area near the NATO headquarters.
Two "fighters" seeking martyrdom carried out the bombings, targeting the headquarters of the “renegade” Afghan intelligence services in Kabul, the group said in a statement posted on an IS-affiliated website.
The blast came just a week after 63 people killed in bombings targeting voter registration centres in Kabul and Baghlan province.
On April 22, as much as 57 people were killed and over hundred injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entry gate of an ID distribution centre in Kabul.
Six people, all from one family, were killed after their vehicle stuck a road side bomb near a voting centre in Pul-e-Khumri city of Baghlan.
