CNN sues Trump administration for revoking its journalist Jim Acosta's White House press credentials

New Delhi:

CNN on Tuesday sued the Donald Trump administration for revoking its journalist Jim Acosta's press credentials hours after he had a testy exchange with the US President during a marathon news conference last week.

“CNN filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration this morning in DC District Court,” the news network said in a statement.

“It demands the return of the White House credentials of CNN’s Chief White House correspondent, Jim Acosta. The wrongful revocation of these credentials violates CNN and Acosta’s First Amendment rights of freedom of the press, and their Fifth Amendment rights to due process.”

The news network said it seeks an immediate restraining order returning the press pass to Acosta.

“While the suit is specific to CNN and Acosta, this could have happened to anyone,” CNN continued in the statement. “If left unchallenged, the actions of the White House would create a dangerous chilling effect for any journalist who covers our elected officials.”

The Trump administration’s move came just hours after CNN's chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta drew the ire of the President by persisting with questions about his views on a caravan of Central American migrants making its way to the US border and refused the president's orders to sit down, and clung to the microphone.
