New Delhi:

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been sentenced to 10 years and his daughter Maryam sentenced to seven years imprisonment in Avenfield Reference on Friday.

An anti-graft court in Pakistan announced its judgment in a corruption case involving former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam, son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar and two sons — Hasan and Hussain on Friday.

The verdict, which was postponed once, comes ahead of the Pakistan general elections in July and is likely to impact the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

"We will take all legal and constitutional routes to fight for justice. Nawaz Sharif has always fought bravely," said Shehbaz Sharif, brother of Nawaz Sharif after former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 10 years jail.

"All our candidates of PML-N are going to contest the election&during their campaign they'll use the platform to highlight the injustice done to us & our disappointment in the decision", he added.

Islamabad-based accountability court judge Mohammad Bashir pronounced the verdict behind closed doors.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecution team chief Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi provided details of the judgement.

“The court sentenced Sharif to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined eight million pounds (over USD 10 million). Maryam was given seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed two million pounds (over USD 2.6 million) and her husband Muhammad Safdar was awarded one year rigorous imprisonment,” Abbasi told media outside the court.

“I congratulate my all prosecution team... It is a victory of the NAB prosecution,” Abbasi said.

The former Pakistan PM has been in London since the month of June to take care of his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer.

The charges on Sharif and his daughter were regarding four London flats that got a mention in the Panama Papers. However, he later denied the ownership but said they were owned by his son Hussain Nawaz in 2006. However, Sharif family admitted that they were staying in the mentioned flats since 1993.

As per the Joint Investigation Team's final report regarding the Panama gate case, the Sharifs had given contradictory statements about their posh flats, as per media reports.

The JIT observed that either Hassan or Hussain or both had lied to hide some facts and hence they could not be given the benefit of doubt, the reports said.
