A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Tuesday late, according to the United States Geological Survey.

According to reports, a hotel on the east coast of Taiwan has collapsed and at least 30 people are trapped in it.

Taiwan national fire agency told the media that they have received inputs regarding several building collapses.

The quake is said to be centered in East China Sea, around 21 kilometers north-northeast of Hualien City.

According to Taiwan local time the quake hit at 11:50 PM (03:50 PM GMT). No reports of casualties have been reported so far.

At least five shallow tremors were reported in the same region within two hours on Sunday.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes. In 1999, around 2,400 people were killed, when a quake with 7.6 magnitude at hit the island.
