New Delhi:

Pakistan was hoping to secure US support of its Kashmir propaganda after President Donald Trump’s mediation claims but in return Washington cut down $440 million of financial aid disbursed under the Pakistan Enhanced Partnership Agreement (PEPA), 2010.

Although the aid was cut down weeks before Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent US visit, Trump administration’s the move clearly shows that Washington is in no mood to shower any more grants on a country, notorious for terror financing and providing safe haven to terrorists.

Last year, Pentagon had cut USD 1 billion worth financial aid to Pakistan due to the country’s failure to take necessary actions against Haqqani terror outfit. Subsequently, the US military had also cancelled USD 300 million financial aid to Pakistan in September 2018 due to similar reasons.

The development has come amid Pakistan’s repeated attempts, seeking US involvement in Kashmir issue. On Friday, Islamabad’s attempt to drag international community in the Kashmir failed miserably after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) suggested bilateral route to resolve the Kashmir issue with India.

Hours before the meeting at the UNSC, Imran Khan had dialled Donald Trump and it was claimed that he even took Trump into confidence. However, a statement from US asking the country to settle the issue with India bilaterally exposed Pakistani claims.

Pakistan has been opposing India's move to remove some provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that gave Jammu and Kashmir a significant automony for decades and devide the state into two Union Territories.

Pakistan, which illegaly occupied a part of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 when the state's ruler decided to join India after Independence, had vowed to exercise "all possible options" to counter India's "illegal" and "unilateral" step.
