A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 rocked the Taiwanese capital of Taipei on Thursday. The earthquake struck 98 km east of Taichung. There are reports of a 4.1 aftershock following the earthquake. The earthquake, which occured at 1.01 pm local time on Thursday, was centered about 10 km northwest of Hualien City. 

The earthquake's highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Hualien County, where it measured 7 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale. The quake also measured an intensity of five in Hualien City, Yilan, Nantou, Taichung and New Taipei, and four in Taipei among others, as reported by focustaiwan.tw.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The Express.co.uk quoted one person as saying on social media: “The earthquake felt so huge that when I was exercising in the park I am most fell over on the sidewalk. It felt like a 7.0 but Not sure about that. I never felt the earthquake standing in the park before.” Another person added: “This is the strongest one I felt in Taipei for last 10 years!”
