Islamabad: Pakistani Taliban militants today appointed Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud as their new chief in place of Mullah Fazlullah, who was recently killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan’s restive Kunar province.

Islamabad: The Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan was today not allowed to enter a Gurdwara by the Sikhs protesting over a controversial movie, a media report claimed, after India summoned Pakistan’s envoy in New Delhi and protested over authorities preventing the Indian mission officials from discharging their consular responsibilities.

Beijing: Nepal can serve as a bridge between India and China, Prime Minister K P Oli has said, insisting that his country will maintain close ties with the two neighbours while pursuing independent foreign policy.

Riyadh: Saudi women celebrated taking the wheel for the first time in decades today as the kingdom overturned the world’s only ban on female motorists, a historic reform expected to usher in a new era of social mobility.

London: Deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif has ruled out returning to Pakistan for now to face corruption charges, while his wife is on a ventilator at a hospital here.

Kathmandu: Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli today said his visit to China has further enhanced the friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two countries in wide-ranging areas including cross-border rail and road connectivity.

Istanbul: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today celebrated winning sweeping new powers in a decisive election victory, as his main rival accepted the outcome despite complaints over an unequal campaign that alarmed the EU.

Washington: President Donald Trump has called for the quick deportation of illegal immigrants who “invade” the US, lamenting that the current immigration system is “unfair” to those who came legally to America.

Jos (Nigeria): Eighty-six people have been killed in an attack by suspected nomadic herders against farming communities in restive central Nigeria, police said today.

Washington: The US Supreme Court today upheld Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban on nationals from several Muslim-majority countries entering America, in a major endorsement of the immigration policy of the president, who welcomed the ruling with a “Wow!”

London: The EU Withdrawal Bill, the British government’s central legislation to pave the way for the country’s exit from the European Union by March next year, today officially became law in Parliament.

Washington: US President Donald Trump, who had batted for Harley-Davidson’s case against India over its high tariffs on the iconic motorcycles, has criticised the company for its plan to shift some of its production units overseas to avoid retaliatory tariffs by the European Union.

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping told US Defence Secretary James Mattis today that China has no plans to create chaos in the world—although he defended his country’s claim to disputed islands in the South China Sea.

Washington: The US has told India and other countries to cut oil imports from Iran to “zero” by November 4 or face sanctions, making it clear that there would be no waivers to anyone.

Islamabad: Pakistan’s National Security Advisor Lt Gen (retd.) Nasser Janjua resigned today, amid reports that he had differences with caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk.

Islamabad: In a blow to Pakistan, the Financial Action Task Force has placed it on the ‘grey list’ for failing to curb anti-terror financing despite Islamabad submitting a 26-point action plan and launching a concerted diplomatic effort to avert the decision, officials said today.

Zurich/New Delhi: Money parked by Indians in Swiss banks rose over 50 per cent to CHF 1.01 billion (Rs 7,000 crore) in 2017, reversing a three-year downward trend amid India’s clampdown on suspected black money stashed there.
