A powerful quake of magnitude 6.4 on Thursday struck Southern California, the US Geological Survey said. There are no immediate reports of damage. The fire department is conducting an assessment.

The earthquake struck near the town of Ridgecrest, California, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles.  Seismologist Lucy Jones tweeted that the quake was proceeded by magnitude 4.2 temblor that shook the area about 30 minutes before the large quake.

The shallow quake struck at a depth of 5.4 miles (8.7 kilometers), with residents as far as Los Angeles saying they felt the tremor.

Earlier on June 32, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake had hit near the Pacific coast of Northern California.

The agency said the earthquake struck at 8:53 pm at a spot 17.3 miles (27.9 kilometers) southwest of Scotia, a town of 850 people.
