Many fans and admirers of Mark E Smith, frontman of the influential post-punk band The Fall turned to social media to post tributes to Manchester music legend on his 60th Bday on Sunday.
However, the person manning the BBC Music Twitter account inadvertently gave his bday an unexpectedly different angle when they erroneously announced Smith had died.
Above an image of a youthful, dour-looking Mark, the account tweeted "RIP Mark E Smith," along with a sad-faced emoji.
The error was quickly noticed and the tweet deleted, then the same image was reposted with the more appropriate message "Happy 60th Mark E Smith" - and a link to a clip of the time the singer appeared on the BBC's Final Score in 2005 and read the football result.
