A knife-wielding man who stabbed four officers at the police headquarters in central Paris on Thursday has been shot dead, sources told news agency AFP. The man, who worked as an employee at the police headquarters, was shot by the police in the courtyard of the building situated near Notre-Dame cathedral, the sources said.

According to CNN, the island is on lockdown, with roads cordoned off by the police and firemen and ambulances on the scene. Loïc Travers, Secretary of the National Police Alliance for the Ile-de-France region, told France's BFM TV that the attacker "has been with us for over 20 years."

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo confirmed on Twitter that "several people" had been killed in the attack, which took place near major tourist sites including the Notre-Dame cathedral.
