At least two people were killed in a shooting outside a synagogue in the eastern German city of Halle, the police said. Reports suggest the police have arrested one person but warned residents to stay indoors. According to reports, witnesses said the gunman was wearing military camouflage and had several weapons.

The Bild newspaper said the attack took place near a synagogue in the Paulus area of the city but this has not been officially confirmed. It also reported that a hand grenade was also thrown onto a Jewish cemetery.

The Halle regional broadcaster said after the gunman fled there was another shooting nearby. The police have cordoned off the Paulus district.

Local police are searching urgently and ask citizens to remain in their homes.

The central train station has been closed while the area is under lockdown, rail company Deutsche Bahn said.

Earlier, investigators said the perpetrators have fled in a vehicle, and a manhunt was underway.

"According to initial information, two people have been killed in Halle," a spokesperson said.

"Several shots were fired. The alleged perpetrators are fleeing in a vehicle. We are asking the public to stay in their homes."
