China temporarily closed the Brahmaputra Grand Canyon — world’s biggest canyon — in Tibet for tourists due to safety reasons following continuous heavy rainfall in the region. According to China, the scenic area has been receiving continuous rainfall which had lead to blockade of several roads connecting to the scenic Brahmaputra Grand Canyon. The administrative office of the area on Saturday had announced closing of the area immediately citing safety concerns. The Brahmaputra river is known as Yarlung Zangbo in Tibet. The canyon with a maximum depth of 6,009 meters hosts unique variety of species and a beautiful plateau scenery. The canyon administration has warned tourists travelling to the area by driving, cycling or walking of possible geographical disasters like landslides and flash floods along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway — 2,400-km route serving as the main Travellers, who plan to reach Tibet by driving down, cycling or walking are also warned of possible geological disasters along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, a 2,400-km route serving as the main artery for visitors to enter Tibet. The 504-km-long Brahmaputra Grand Canyon is a national tourist attraction in Tibet. The canyon, Potala Palace and Mt Qomolangma (Mt Everest) are considered Tibet’s three world- class tourist destinations.
