New Delhi:

China had to withdraw a notice for a discussion at the United Nations Security Council on Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday after France and other permanent members thwarted the effort on behalf of Pakistan. According to reports, China pushed for a meeting of the UN Security Council behind closed doors. France and other permanent members of the UNSC conveyed to China, it was not the best forum to discuss the Kashmir issue as it was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Non-permanent members of the council such as Germany and Poland also showed no inclination for a discussion on Kashmir.

The Chinese side withdrew its note seeking the meeting on Kashmir.

Pakistan has been pushing China to take up the Kashmir issue in the Security Council since India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 revoking priovisions of Article 375.

UNSC had met on Kashmir in August, the first such meeting in decades after India revoked J&K's special status. The closed consultations on August 16 marked the first time the Security Council took up the “India-Pakistan Question” – the UN’s term for the Kashmir issue – since 1971.
