A magnitude 6.5-quake struck off Chile's coast near the coastal city of Coquimbo early on Friday morning (IST), the US Geological Survey reported. The quake, which hit an earthquake-prone area, was very shallow and struck 51 miles (82 km) west of Coquimbo, the USGS added. The quake was initially measured at 6.4 magnitude.

Chilean authorities said the quake was centered under the ocean and there was no tsunami warning issued.

Chile is located in the so-called “Ring of Fire,” which makes it one of the most seismic countries in the world. An 8.8-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami in 2010 killed 525 people and left 26 missing.
