London:

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron, who quit after losing June 23 Brexit vote, on Monday announced his resignation as an MP with immediate effect. His announcement, made in an interview, is a reversal of previous statements by the former prime minister.

The 49-year-old Conservative leader had initially said he would continue as an MP until the next general election.

His resignation as MP will pave way for a by-election in his Oxfordshire seat of Witney. He has represented Witney since 2001, becoming Conservative leader in 2005 and serving as prime minister for six years from 2010.

The former prime minister’s retreat from elected office comes after controversy over his resignation honours list.  He was accused of awarding his ‘cronies’, British media reported.

Cameron resigned as prime minister after June’s EU referendum and was replaced by Theresa May.
