New Delhi:

Hurricane Matthew is considered the strongest with the most destructive winds in parts of the northeast and east-central Florida coast. Matthew is the only Category 4 hurricane to make landfall anywhere in northeast Florida or Georgia coast.

Death toll in Haiti has soared to more than 300, according to reports. The most powerful Carribean storm has caused massive destruction, nearby city of Jeremie saw 80% of its buildings levelled.

Most of the deaths reported in Haiti are in towns and fishing villages around the southern coast. For rescue efforts, US is sending nine military helicopters to help deliver food and water to the hardest-hit areas.

In the wake of the approaching Hurricane, President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Florida. Obama has also ordered federal aid to go toward response efforts.
