Coronavirus: Chinese President Xi Jinping Makes First Visit To Wuhan As Death Toll Crosses 3,100

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made the first visit to Wuhan since the coronavirus outbreak, the state media reported. Jinping paid a visit to Wuhan, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, for an inspection of steps being taken to curb the deadly transmission. Xi Jinping is slated to visit and express regards to medical workers, military officers and soldiers, community workers, police officers, officials and volunteers who have been at the forefront of fighting coronavirus, reported Xinhua.

Earlier, in his first public appearance after the deadly coronavirus outbreak, president Xi had taken stock of the situation and reviewed steps to contain the epidemic in the capital Beijing.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had made a visit to Wuhan on January 26 when the COVID-19 virus was spreading at an alarming pace.

The novel coronavirus originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year and has claimed over 3,000 lives in the country. According to AFP figures, China reported 17 new deaths on Tuesday taking the toll to 4,011. The coronavirus outbreak has spread to over 100 countries with more than 110,000 cases of infection reported so far.

Moreover, China has started to dismantle a host of temporary hospitals built-in big public places to meet the rush of patients in the wake of coronavirus outbreak. Earlier, it constucted two makeshift hospitals with 2,300 beds capacity in just about 10 days in February. On Sunday, two makeshift hospitals were suspended in Wuhan, capital of China’s Hubei Province.

Till recent update, operations in 11 makeshift hospitals have been suspended in Wuhan, which were converted from public facilities for the treatment of patients with mild symptoms in the city, the the Xinhua report said.
