New Delhi:

In yet another case of shootout in the US, several people were reportedly injured after a late-night incident in Washington, DC, according to local media. Police and ambulances are on the scene. The mass shooting took place in Columbia Heights District of Washington, DC. Some reports suggest that as many as six people were injured in the shootout. Now reports are coming in that one person was killed and five injured in the shooting. The incident will yet again spark the debate over gun control. According to a report, the US saw as many as 19 mass shootings this year alone. The total number of deadly mass shootings in the United States in 2019 comes out to an average of one every 13 days, a latest ABC report said.

Chris G Collison, a Fullbright researcher who lives in the area, was among the first Twitter users to report about the incident. He posted several videos of ambulances taking the injured to nearby hospital. “Sounded like multiple gunshots on Columbia Rd NW in Columbia Heights, DC. lots of police and EMT,” was his first tweet about the shooting.  “Multiple people being taken to the hospital in Columbia Heights,” he said in another tweet.

Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit firm, has reported that there have been 283 mass shootings in the US as of September 2019. This makes 2019 the worst year in gun violence with more than one shooting incident being reported daily. It should be noted that a series of measures are currently before Congress, notably to close loopholes in background checks aimed at preventing gun sales to people with criminal records or psychiatric history.

US President Donald Trump has maintained that he would like to work on eliminating mass shootings. Soon after West Texas shooting, Trump had said that, "We want to substantially reduce the violent crime." There has been scepticism over his commitment to work against gun violence in the US. Many believe the politically powerfully gun owners' lobby that strongly backed his bid to become President may not allow him to take any stringent measure.
