Islamabad:

Pakistan's interior minister Nisar Ali Khan appreciated Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan's decision to cancel his anti-government protest to lock down Islamabad aimed at forcing Premier Nawaz Sharif to resign over corruption allegations.

The interior minister while addressing a press conference refused to take credit for countering Imran's plan.

"There are no winners or losers today. Today Pakistan has won," he said. "It is a win for our children's futures, and for institutions in this country. Pakistan's win is in peace, democracy, rule of law and reliance on our institutions," Nisar said.

He said that government took some hard measures to stop protests but it was important for law and order.

After calling off the protests, Imran Khan instead announced celebrations after the Supreme Court ordered a probe against Sharif and his family over the Panama Papers scandal.

Khan, 64, said outside his Bani Gala residence in Islamabad that it's time to "celebrate victory and offer thanks". "Go home and rest," cricketer-turned-politician Khan told about 300 supporters who had been camping outside his residence.

"I am elated that the investigation into Nawaz Sharif's (alleged corruption) will begin day after tomorrow," he said.

The Supreme Court had set November 3 as date of hearing in the case.

Three of Sharif's four children are said to be owners of offshore companies, according to the Panama Papers.

Sharif and his family have dismissed the allegations of money laundering and denied any wrongdoing but the opposition is demanding an independent probe.
