The US House of Representatives will vote on impeachment procedures against President Donald Trump for the first time later this week. The Trump administration reacted sharply to the move, accusing the Democrats of conducting an “unauthorized impeachment proceeding”. In the letter, released to the press on Monday, Pelosi said, “This week, we will bring a resolution to the Floor that affirms the ongoing, existing investigation that is currently being conducted by our committees as part of this impeachment inquiry, including all requests for documents, subpoenas for records and testimony, and any other investigative steps previously taken or to be taken as part of this investigation.”

“We are taking this step to eliminate any doubt as to whether the Trump Administration may withhold documents, prevent witness testimony, disregard duly authorized subpoenas, or continue obstructing the House of Representatives,” Pelosi said.

The House Rules Committee described it as “directing certain committees to continue their ongoing investigations as part of the existing House of Representatives inquiry into whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to exercise its Constitutional power to impeach Donald John Trump, President of the United States of America, and for other purposes”.

Earlier, former vice president and Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden has called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, saying the White House occupant is a “threat to American democracy” and has “violated” his oath of office.

Trump has denied that he’d done anything wrong in his relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, insisting that his only interest was “looking at corruption.” Trump has repeatedly claimed that Biden and his son were involved in corruption in Ukraine. “He is pillaging these countries,” Trump said.

It is being alleged that during the conversation Trump threatened to withhold military aid to force Ukraine to investigate corruption allegations against former Vice-President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Biden is currently the front-runner in the race for Democratic nominee for 2020 Presidential Elections.

Trump has already acknowledged discussing Joe Biden with Zelensky but said he was only trying to get Europe to step up assistance by threatening to withhold military aid.
