New Delhi:

Its time to end the Us versus them mentality rather focus on motivating each other and spread happiness irrespective of your body size.

The body love that is generally promoted and accepted in the society refers to the slimmer one. Apparently, slimmer people are predisposed to an easier and comparatively more privileged experience in society, when it comes to different body types.

Various body types from skinny, slim, curvy, fat, plus-size, voluptuous, male, female to gender-fluid face different remarks and get to experience differently.

Popping eyes, sore faces, puerile remarks all tantamount to remind you that you are not perfect and that is even nature’s truth. Nobody is perfect!

The two common distinctions that exist in our society are:

The one that systematically privileges those who fall on the thin side of the spectrum (skinny) and the other one which marginalises those who don’t fall under the first category.

To combat the existing prejudice and notions about the different body types, campaigns such as body shaming, slut walk, skinny shaming have begun.

Females post their pictures showing their plump, voluptuous side posing in absolute confidence!

Similarly, skinny shaming is the slim girls posing confidently and loving their bodies irrespective of the a conventional accepted definition of beauty.

Its high time to redefine the definition of beauty. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, the creation of nature can never go wrong, same goes for different body types.

Fat shaming to skinny shaming would be like comparing chalk and cheese.

Not only this we also expect our role models to stay the way they probably should, oh really? But why?

Endless discussions take place on how a woman should be, how she should not put on extra pounds. But where many see gym culture and clean eating as something to be applauded, and thinspiration & fitspiration hashtags in abundance on social media?

In a culture which is so obsessed with physical appearance, the deep rooted desire to be skinny can be highly detrimental to someone’s mental health and self-esteem.

Sometimes, the girls go on plain diet, abstaining food in order to maintain the zero figure. But that in turn harms the mental and physical health.

Mostly thin people do have a more positive social experience with regards to body image but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the relationship that they have with their body is positive too. We need to do more to end the us VS. them mentality.

Perpetuating body ideologies may not be a good idea when it comes to claiming that we are a society that believes in equality. Focus should be to extend same support and acceptance to all bodies whether they are thin, fat or anything.
