New Delhi:

With a delayed monsoon, vegetables have also started acting pricey and are demanding more money to satisfy the needs of the aam aadmi.

The situation has worsened to such an extent that food inflation nears 10 per cent and has raised concerns of a first drought in five years in the country.

The situation poses a great challenge for the new Narendra Modi-led government to decrease the prices of vegetables.

How monsoon occurs?

The south-western summer monsoons occur from June through September, resulting in an increased temperature at the Thar Desert and adjoining areas of the northern and central Indian subcontinent. The whole phenomenon decreases the pressure and to create equilibrium, the moisture-laden winds start flowing from the Indian Ocean in to the subcontinent.

Now, these moisture filled winds flow and hit Himalayas, which act like a high wall. As winds collide clouds gain altitude, the temperature drops and precipitation occurs, as a result of which some areas receive up to 10,000 mm (390 in) of rain annually.

Why monsoon is delayed this year?

The southwest monsoon is generally expected to begin around the start of June and fade down by the end of September. But this year, the whole phenomenon started a bit late and resulted in a delayed monsoon.

How delayed monsoon is responsible for price rise?

India is an agro-based country and rely on its farmers the most but farmers depend only on one thing – Rainfall. And delayed monsoon results in late or less rainfall which decreases the productivity of vegetables, here comes the demand-supply factor according to which increased demand and decreased supply results in price rise.

Solutions to control price rise?

To control the inflation, government then tries to import more and export less to fulfil the needs of their country’s residents, which was seen recently when government had increased onion export price by 67 per cent to take control over inflation.

Well, in such natural obligations, government can’t be blamed for price rise and the prices keep creating holes in the common man’s pocket.
