Jalandhar:
Protesters halted the Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express here on Friday amid a state wide shutdown in Punjab on the 30th anniversary of the 1984 riots.
Passengers complained of severe inconvenience due to the disruption of train services.
"Is this a joke? Somebody has an interview, someone has a flight to catch and small children are getting affected here. What will a poor person do? Do revolutions take place like this?" complained a passenger.
"I was travelling from Phagwara to Delhi. All the trains have been stopped. We are very harassed," said another passenger, Sourabh Verma.
Meanwhile, in Amritsar, police detained a group of protesters led by the All India Sikh Students Federation.
"Today, entire Punjab is shut. We are peacefully protesting, but today the way police has stopped us, it has unveiled the Punjab government. Police are pushing and arresting even elderly people, ladies and children. In such circumstances we want to ask who should we go to and seek justice from?" said President of All India Sikh Students Federation, Karnail Singh.
Thousands of Sikhs were targeted by rioters after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
The assassination was revenge against Operation Blue Star conducted at the Golden Temple to flush out militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
Operation Blue Star was ordered by Indira Gandhi to remove separatist Bhindranwale, and his armed followers from the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
