Former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Dhananjay Singh was today acquitted by a Delhi Court of the charges of raping and criminally intimidating a woman after the alleged victim turned hostile.
Advocate S P M Tripathi, who represented the former MP in this case, said that Singh was given the benefit of doubt in absence of any evidence against him.
"In its verdict today, honourable jury members at Karkardooma Court have said that no charges can be framed against Dhananjay Singh and there is no evidence against him. Hence, he has been acquitted of the charges. The court has mentioned that the statement presented by the prosecution wasn't supported by the prosecution and the prosecution's attitude during the course of the investigation wasn't good and was motivated," Tripathi told ANI here.
"The fact that the alleged victim kept on changing her deposition and the prosecution was unable to bring out the truth, Singh was given the benefit of doubt by the court and was absolved of all the charges," he added.
Singh, a former BSP MP from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, was accused of rape by a 42-year-old married woman.
The police had in the chargesheet against the former MP in this case alleged that he had repeatedly raped the woman between July 2005 and March 2009.
