Lucknow:

A day after around 100 skeletons literally tumbled out of Uttar Pradesh police cupboard, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav assured News Nation for probe.

A committee, including experts, began probe into the sensational recovery amid the administration's acceptance of a lapse.

DIG (Lucknow range) R K Chaturvedi, District Magistrate Unnao Soumya Agarwal and Chief Medical Officer of the district Geeta Yadav inspected the spot during which 47 sacks carrying human bones and 74 jars containing viscera were found from a room in the police lines complex.

Chaturvedi told reporters in Lucknow that the six-member team comprising a sub-divisional magistrate, a magistrate, DySP, doctor, forensic expert and incharge of post mortem room has started a probe.

Three former employees informed that autopsy was done in that room till 1993 and viscera was being preserved till 2008, he said.

Of the 74 jars in which viscera was preserved, labelling was done on 58. The oldest one was of 1980 and the latest was labelled in 2007. All the 47 sacks stuffed with human bones were labelled, he said.

"Records of all the remains between 1979 and 2008 are available. Based on the labelling, it will be assessed if the bones and viscera are connected to some crime and why they were not disposed of till now," he said.

Chaturvedi admitted there was lapse at some point.

"There was some lapse. In 2009 such remains were found outside post mortem houses at four or five places, including Etah and Aligarh. After that, a policy was formulated," he said.

The DIG said the policy was followed in some districts in cases after 2010.

The recovery of around 100 skeletons from the police lines' room sent the Uttar Pradesh police into tizzy as the matter came to light barely a fortnight after as many bodies were found from the river Ganges here.
