New Delhi:

In a major blunder, Google’s artificial intelligence on Thursday drew criticism after company’s computers tagged two black people as “Gorillas” in its new photo app.

According to Jacky Alciné, a web developer who spotted the error and tweeted a photo of it said, “Google Photos. My friend’s not a gorilla.”

When encountered, Google apologised and called it an algorithm problem which will be fixed soon. It has also removed Gorillas tagging now.

“We’re appalled and genuinely sorry that this happened. There is still clearly a lot of work to do with automatic image labeling, and we’re looking at how we can prevent these types of mistakes from happening in the future,” Google spokeswoman said.

The gorilla tags turned up in the search feature of the Google Photos app, which the company released a few weeks ago.
