New Delhi :

When you sit in a group of female friends, one problem which most of the women today are bound to suffer from is Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which leads to several more troubles in their daily routines.

In PCOS a woman's hormones grow out of balance and can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant.

It may also lead to changes in the way you look and can create serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Usually women who suffer from PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries, thus the name polycystic ovary syndrome which can lead to terrible hormone imbalances.

Early diagnosis is beneficial as hormones are chemical messengers that trigger many different processes, including growth and energy production.

Once detected, the hormones can become problematic as one hormone signals the release of another hormone thus creating chaos.

Reasons of PCOS:

The sex hormones get out of balance. Why? Because normally, the ovaries make a tiny amount of male sex hormones (androgens). In PCOS, they start making slightly more androgens. This may cause you to stop ovulating, get acne, and grow extra facial and body hair.

Then insulin resistance may increase not allowing your body to use insulin well thus triggering up the blood sugar levels finally increasing your chance of getting diabetes.

The cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but genetics may be a factor. Observe the most common symptoms to keep the trouble at bay:

  • Acne.
  • Weight gain and trouble losing weight.
  • Extra hair on the face and body. Often women get thicker and darker facial hair and more hair on the chest, belly, and back.
  • Thinning hair on the scalp.
  • Irregular periods. Often women with PCOS have fewer than nine periods a year. Some women have no periods. Others have very heavy bleeding.
  • Fertility problems. Many women who have PCOS have trouble getting pregnant (infertility).
  • Depression.

According to a recent study, "In India about 18 per cent of women suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a disorder which causes infertility among the fairer sex."

The researchers also found that it is a prevalent endocrine disorder in women and the leading cause of infertility nowdays.

The increasing trend of PCOS is predominantly seen in the child bearing age group of 15 to 30 years and is a characteristic amalgamation of cosmetic, gynecological and metabolic symptoms.
