The booking for the much-awaited Jeep Compass is now open. The Made-in-India model of the famous ‘Jeep’ by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India can be pre-booked at Rs 50,000. Jeep Compass is being locally manufactured at the company’s joint-venture facility in Ranjangaon (near Pune) and is eagerly watched re-entry of once a favourite line of automobiles in India.
“To harness the great demand for the Jeep Compass, we have executed a customer outreach across 21 cities at 26 shopping malls across India,” FCA President and Managing Director Kevin Flynn said.
Customers will experience, first-hand, the level of sophistication in the vehicle and those interested can book the SUV online or at any of FCA and Jeep Dealer network across India, he added.
The vehicle will be launched with both petrol and diesel engines mated to manual as well as automatic transmissions.
Compass is a compact SUV and comes from the family of powerful Grand Cherokee and the all-terrain Wrangler. At first look, the car may not look as imposing but certainly packs the punch.
The muscular beast has the 170bhp 2.0-litre Multijet II engine from Fiat. It also has a petrol engine option – the 1.4-litre T-Jet engine from Fiat that develops over 160bhp of power. Both the engines come mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox and you can opt for the famed Jeep four-wheel drive system.
As for the safety, the Jeep is expected to have dual-front airbags as standard along with ABS and EBD. The higher-spec trims might get more airbags and the automatic versions will get ESP.
The Jeep Compass is expected to be budget car starting at about Rs 16 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi and will extend up to Rs 25 lakh for the top-spec Compass. At this price, it goes against the Hyundai Tucson, the Honda CR-V and the Skoda Yeti amongst the five-seater premium SUVs.

More Jeeps to come
The Compass is the first model from the Jeep range to be produced in India. Fiat Chrysler had launched the Jeep brand in India in August last year with its completely built units (CBUs).
The Ranjangaom manufacturing facility, a 50:50 joint venture between FCA and Tata Motors, has a capacity to produce 1.6 lakh units and 3.5 lakh engines.
By 2017-end, the Jeep brand portfolio in India will consist of three new models—Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherooke, besides Jeep Compass, it said.
