Google doodle celebrates Begum Akhtar's 103rd birthday.

Google doodle in its own way wished the iconic ghazal singer Begum Akhtar on her 103rd Birthday. The legendary ghazal singer was born on October 7, 1914, in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad. Her soulful and melancholic voice was featured in many movies.

She was the well-known singer of Ghazal Dadra and Thumri genres of Hindustani classical music.

She struggled a lot in her career as her family was against the music industry. Despite the personal agony, Begum Akhtar's mother recognized her daughter's gift at a young age. Her mother sent her for vocal training with some of the Ustads of the time.

Before entry to the music industry, Akhtar had gained fame in the theatre world. But in the end, she returned to classical music where she composed many of her own melodies and started her career in the rhythm of ghazals.

Akhtar also made is debut as an actress in the movie Ék din ka Badshah, but the film unable to get the praise. Her 1958 movie Jalsagar, directed by Satyajit Ray turned out to be her last film as an actress. She continued her association with theatres and acted is some of them.

During her last concert in Ahmedabad, she raised the pitch of her voice as she felt that her singing had not been as good as she had wanted it to be and she felt unwell. The additional demand and stress that she put herself under resulted in her falling ill and was rushed to the hospital.

Notably, she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for vocal music and was also awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Earlier on September 29, Google celebrated its birthday with a doodle with surprise spinner game.
