A local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau acquitted BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari and seven others in a August 2009  double murder case on Wednesday.

The court has convicted three others to life term imprisonment in connection to the August 2009 murder case that took place under City Kotwali police station jurisdiction in Mau.

The MLA from Mau Sadar seat is currently lodged at Banda district jail.

Ansari’s counsel Daroga Singh said, “The Additional District Judge Adil Aftab Ahmad on acquitted Ansari and seven others in the double murder case on lack of evidence.”

Singh added that the court examined 13 prosecution witnesses.

He added that the court, however has sentenced three others including Raju Kannojia, Amresh Kannojia and Arvind Yadav to life imprisonment.

Singh told the media that Raju and Amresh are natives of Mau, while Arvind is resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district. The trio are in jail since 2009.

According to Ansari’s counsel, the case dates back to August 29, 2009, after a contractor Manna Singh and his associate were attacked by armed men. Manna died the crim scene while his associate succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

An FIR was lodged by Manna’s cousin against unidentified people on murder charges at the City Kotwali police station.
