Ambubachi Mela is one of the most important festival of the Kamakhya Devi Temple, Guwahati. The Ambubachi is a ritual that is observed with “Tantrik means”. It is believed that Devi Kamakhya, the Mother Shakti, goes through her annual cycle of menstruation during this time stretch.
The Kamakhya Temple is known to be one of the 52 shakti peethas of goddess Shakti. 

Kamakhya Temple hosts the Ambubachi Mela every year in the month of June where the temple remains closed for three days and is opened to the public on the fourth day of the fair. This year the mela will be hosted from June 22 till June 26.

The three days when the temple remain closed for pilgrims is considered to be the time of the year when the goddess menstruates. It is marked as an auspicious period when women pray for fertility and celebrate the child bearing capabilities. During the Ambubachi Mela large number of people gather near the temple also various tantrics and sadhus who avoid making public appearances on regular basis visit the temple for this festival.

But before the doors of the temple are reopened Devi Kamakhya is bathed and the other rituals are executed. Only after this the Mother Earth has retrieved her purity. 

On the fourth day, the doors of the temple are reopened for the devotees and are allowed to enter the temple for worshipping Devi Kamakhya.

On this day everyone look forward to receiving a piece of cloth soaked in what’s said to be the goddess’s menstrual fluid. This festival is  one of the unique fairs hosted in India.
