Chennai:

A woman in Chennai on Tuesday died of severe burn injuries after she, her mother and sister were allegedly set ablaze by a 23-year-old man, who police believe was stalking her for the last one month.

The Chennai Police have detained one Akash in connection to the incident. According to police the detained was pursuing the deceased, Induja, to accept his friendship for nearly a month.

According to police, the accused around 9pm on Monday went to the woman’s house in South Chennai’s Velachery. He forced the girl and her family members to open the door by threatening them of committing suicide by setting himself on fire. When the three women came out he threw petrol and put them on fire.

The police added that neighbours on came to their rescue. They doused the fire and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Induja succumbed to her injuries on her way to the hospital.

The deceased was pursuing a specialised course after completing her engineering, while the accused was jobless.

An inspector rank police officer said that the motive behind the crime was ‘clear’. “The accused killed the girl after she rejected him,” said the inspector.
