Jharkhand: Big cat count rises to six in Palamau Tiger Reserve

This is really gonna be a good news for Tiger lovers. According to the recent reports, there are at least six tigers in the Palamau Betla Tiger Reserve in Jharkhand and the number further could increase.

The numbers of the tigers were confirmed by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun through DNA test of 54 samples, said Additional Chief Secretary Indu Chaturvedi.

The reserve recorded its highest tiger population in 1995 with 71 tigers but since then the big cat numbers have been dwindling and come down to 10 in 2010. The count further declined to three in 2014 unlike rest of the country where tiger population witnessed 30% increase between 2010 and 2014.In 

While addressing the press conference, he said that in order to fulfill water requirement in a tiger reserve in summers old check dams are being renovated while some now some new check dams are being built.

Not only this in a bid to increase security measures, the number of forest guards has also increased and GPS patrolling is being done.The compensation for any person dying of animal attack has been increased from Rs 2.5 lakh to 4 lakh, in case of injury the person will get Rs 1 lakh.

Nearly 8.56 crore saplings were planted in the 1000 days of the Raghuvar Das government and Rs 718.88 crore was spent on it, he said, adding that new saplings are planted in case the old ones get dried, Chaturvedi said.

He said that plastic carry bags have been banned in Jharkhand.
