The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that life is more important than liquor during hearing a petition filed by several state liquor association requesting to reduce the distance of liquor shop from National Highways.

The state liquor association has stated in its plea that 500 metres is much higher and it should be reduced as the Apex court had banned liquor shops within 500 metre on state and National Highways.

Appearing for the liquor association, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that the 500 metres distance should be reduced.

A Bench, comprising Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and S.K. Kaul, had assured on Tuesday a battery of lawyers led by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi that it will ensure that the matters will be taken up for Wednesday.

“If Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is not available tomorrow, then I will constitute a separate Bench,” the Chief Justice had said.

Mr. Rohatgi had told the court that the apex court judgment ordering the closure of liquor vends alongside highways, will come into effect from April 1 and this leads to a situation where an urgent hearing is needed.
