New Delhi:

Mukul Roy on Wednesday submitted his resignation from Rajya Sabha as Trinamool Congress MP to Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu.

"Today I am resigning from RS membership elected as a member of TMC, also resign from all posts of TMC as a primary member," said Mukul Roy after resigning.

"With heavy heart and heavy pain, I am compelled to submit my resignation," said Roy.

"I have resigned, now I will go for leaves and then decide my future course of action," said Roy.

Earlier on September 25, Roy announced that he will resign from the post of Rajya Sabha MP after Durga Puja.

"With a heavy heart, I am announcing that I will quit the primary party post of Trinamool Congress and the Rajya Sabha membership. I will formally resign after the Durga Puja break," said Mukul Roy in press conference.

For a long time, Mukul was considered as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s right hand.

However, there were reports in recent times which speculated Mukul’s chances of joining Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
