A Lucknow man was killed as violence erupted in Lucknow while two persons were killed in police firing in Mangaluru on Thursday as protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, turned violent in various parts of the country.

Violence erupted in the state capital and some other parts of Uttar Pradesh with protesters, angry over the new citizenship law, pelting stones at police and torching vehicles. Mohammad Wakeel (25) suffered a firearm injury when he was passing through an old city area where the clashes took place, his family members said. The police, however, denied that the firearm injury had anything to do with the protests or the police action.

Internet services remained suspended for at least part of the day at various places, including Aligarh, Sambhal, Mau and Azamgarh districts. Scattered incidents of violence were reported from Lucknow's old city and parts of Sambhal and Mau districts. Two buses were torched and police posts targeted in Lucknow and Sambhal. Police said 18 of their own personnel (16 in Lucknow and two in Sambhal) were injured. Altogether, 112 protesters detained. Section 144 of the CrPc, which bans the assembly of people, had already been in force in the entire state for several days now.

In Mangaluru, two persons were killed as protesters attempted to lay siege to the Mangalore North police station and tried to attack police personnel, following which force was used to disperse them, police sources said.

Over 1200 people were detained across several parts of Delhi throughout the day while protests continued till late evening at Jantar Mantar. Police detained several protesters in Bengaluru's Town Hall including Historian Ramchandra Guha. A number of protesters were detained near Red Fort in Delhi, including Swaraj India's Yogendra Yadav. Around 18 Delhi Metro stations were shut in Delhi across routes, many of which were reopened later. Mamata Banerjee took out a separate protest rally in Kolkata once again and slammed the BJP saying they are buying skull caps for violent protesters to spread hatred against one particular community

Mobile internet services have been suspended in Ghaziabad for 24 hours from 10 pm on Thursday in view of violent protests against the new citizenship law in parts of Uttar Pradesh, an official said. The action has been taken to avoid spreading of hate messages on social media with an aim to disturb the communal peace and harmony, the official said. District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pande has instructed mobile phone service providers to suspend internet services till 10 pm on Friday, the official said. The district magistrate has taken this action to thwart any possibility of violence and arson in the district, he added. 

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Lucknow violence: "I have called a meeting over this. You cant indulge in violence in name of protest. We will take strict action against such elements. Will seize property of those found guilty and compensate damage to public property."

Lucknow: 20 motorcycles, 10 cars, 3 buses and 4 media OB vans have been set ablaze in the area around Parivartan Chowk during protests against Citizenship Act  today.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata: "Let there be an impartial organisation like United Nations or National Human Rights Commission hold a referendum to see how many people are in favour or against Citizenship Act."



According to reports, over 200 people have been kept detained at Surajmal Stadium in Nangloi while over 50 are at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium in Bawana. The numbers are expected to increase as more protestors are being brought there from different places. 

The government, meanwhile, has asked people not to worry saying the violent protests against the Citizenship Act was only in few places in Delhi and Lucknow. Union Minister of State (Home) GK Reddy said, " Some political parties trying to incite students, women in the name of religion."

Chennai Police have revoked permission for today’s rally to be held against Citizenship Act in Valluvar Kottam.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPc have been imposed in the whole of Uttar Pradesh.
