In a tragic mishap, two persons were killed and 50 injured on Thursday evening after a dilapidated Portuguese-era bridge collapsed at Curchorem village in Goa.
The bridge caved in when the state Fire And Emergency Services personnel were rescuing a youth who had jumped into the river apparently in a suicide bid. The people gathered to watch the rescue operation which led the mishap. Around 30 people are still missing.
“Around 50 people had gathered on the bridge to watch the rescue operation, and all of them fell into the river as it collapsed,” a police official said. Some of them managed to swim ashore, he added.

The rescue operation was in full swing. Nearly 35 people were rescued. Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar has also called Navy divers to assist in the rescue operation.
