New Delhi:
A day after violent protests took a toll at the national capital over Citizenship Amendment Act, the Delhi police on Monday rejected all charges of using excessive and disproportionate force against students of Jamia Millia Islamia University. It further stated that the Crime Branch will investigate Jamia violence.
Addressing a media, Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa said, "The Delhi Police's crime branch will investigate the Jamia violence and people should not pay any heed to social media rumours." Randhawa also clarified that police used "maximum restraint, minimum force" despite being provoked by protesters. "There was no firing, there have been no casualties in Jamia violence. The crime branch will investigate Jamia violence. A thorough investigation will be done and accountability will be fixed," PTI quoted Randhawa as saying.
He further said, "Four DTC buses, 100 private vehicles, and 10 police bikes were damaged during the violence. One policeman is in the ICU." "We are monitoring social media. I appeal students and public at large to not pay any heed to rumours," he added.
On being asked about the police entering in Jamia campus without any permission, Randhawa said, "Some cops did enter the university campus. But it was to nab some miscreants. We are trying to push back the protesters." He further added that no firing took place and there are no casualties.
On Sunday, Protestors clashed with police on Sunday afternoon and set on fire three public buses and a fire tender in New Friends' Colony, leaving a cop and two fire personnel injured.

Amid the violent protests, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal spoke to Lt Governor Anil Baijal and urged him to take all steps to restore normalcy following the violent protest against the amended citizenship law in a posh south Delhi neighbourhood. Kejriwal said the Delhi government is doing everything possible at its end to restore peace.
