New Delhi:

Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march. At least 18 people, including JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.

The violence drew strong reactions from opposition parties which hit out at the BJP and accused "those in power" of trying to scuttle the voice of students.

JNU Violence: Administration releases statement


JNU administration releases statement after violence broke out today evening.


"This is an urgent message for the entire JNU Community that there is a law and order situation in the JNU Campus. Masked miscreants armed with sticks are roaming around, damaging property and attacking people.

 
The JNU Administration has called the police to maintain order.
 
This is the moment to remain calm and be on the alert. In view of the largeness of the campus, number 100 can also be dialled.
 
Efforts are already being made to tackle the miscreants.
 




JNU Teachers' Association to hold a press conference at the campus's North Gate at 9PM tonight.

Seven ambulances have been sent to Jawaharlal Nehru University and 10 ambulances are on standby, reported ANI.

In a statement, ABVP said, "The ABVP members at the JNU have been attacked by people affiliated with the AISA, DSF and AISA. At least 15 students have been injured...Students at various hostels of the JNU have been attacked. The people belonging to the Left organisations have broken the windows."
