Krishna Sobti, famous Hindi writer and essayist, passed away on Friday at the age of 93. She will be cremated at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat crematorium later in the day. Born in Gujarat in British India, now in Pakistan’s Punjab province, Sobti was a well-known name in the Indian literature corridors and received many awards for her work.
Sobti grew up in Shimla and Delhi. After initially beginning her higher education at Fatehchand College in Pakistan’s Lahore, she migrated to India during the Partition. At the age of 70, she fell in love with a Dogri writer Shivnath and married to him.
Her work included 1966 novel Mitro Marajani, a portrayal of married woman’s sexuality. In 1980, she had received the Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel Zindaginama. She was also the first recipient of the Katha Chudamani Award in 1999 for Lifetime Literary Achievement.
In 2008, her novel Samay Sargam was selected for Vyas Samman. Recently in 2017, she was awarded the prestigious Jnanpith for her contribution to Indian literature.
