The Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has detained a doctor from Nanded district of Maharashtra for allegedly sending suspicious envelopes to controversial BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, police said on Saturday. Thakur had lodged a complaint with police, alleging that she received envelopes by post which had poisonous chemicals on them. Police seized 3-4 envelopes from the MP’s residence and some of these contained letters in the Urdu language.
The MP ATS found that Dr Sayyed Abdul Rehman Khan (35), who runs a clinic in Dhanegaon (in Nanded district), had sent these suspicious envelopes to Thakur, inspector Pradeep Kakade of Itwara police station in Nanded to news agency PTI.
“The MP ATS detained Khan on Thursday evening from Dhanegaon. He had been on the police’s radar for the last three months, as he had previously written letters to some government officials, claiming that his mother and brother had terror links and they should be arrested,” Kakade said.
“The police tried keeping a tab on him using his mobile phone location. However, he would leave his phone at home and travel to Aurangabad, Nagpur and other cities to post these letters,” Kakade added.
The Bhopal lawmaker once again found herself in a sticky situation outside a prominent university in her constituency. In an incident that took place on December 25, the BJP MP was greeted with ‘terrorist’ slogan when she was meeting two students of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication in Bhopal. Right outside the university gates, she was surrounded by students, many of them belonging to NSUI. They didn’t let the MP to enter the university. They raised “aatankwadi wapas jayo" and "Pragya Thakur go back" slogans. She retreated and left the place. However, afterwards, she said that she ‘will consult legal experts and subsequently take legal action against all those involved.’
During her campaigning days, the Malegaon blast accused had said that former Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare died in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks as she had cursed him for treating her “very badly” while she was in custody in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. “Hemant Karkare falsely implicated me. He died of his karma. I told him, he will be destroyed. I told him his entire dynasty will be erased. Maine kaha tera (Karkare) sarvanash hoga,” she had said. Pragya had also stirred some controversy during her oath-taking ceremony in the Lok Sabha.
