Amid the nation-wide outrage over the recent incidents of rape in Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh and Tripura, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reacted on the issue of women safety. Addressing DGP/IGP conference at Pune, Modi said that effective policing will have a crucial role in ensuring women’s safety and security.

He also said that at all times, officials must strive to improve the image of the police force to inspire confidence among all sections of society including women and children. A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said that PM Modi was of the view that technology provides an effective weapon to ensure proactive policing that factors in the feedback of the common man.

The remarks of the prime minister have come against the backdrop of recent cases of crimes against women which has triggered a public outcry. On Thursday, a rape victim in Uttar Pradesh' Unnao was set on fire allegedly by the men accused of raping her while she was on her way to court to attend a hearing in the case.

According to the details emerged through various reports, the woman ran for a kilometre shouting for help after being set on fire and called the ambulance herself. She sustained 90 per cent burn injury. She succumbed to the burns at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Friday night.

Following her death, massive protests broke out in Lucknow and two union state cabinet minister were heckled by locals when they went to meet the family members of the woman. The Opposition Congress also portested in the state with police resorting to lathicharge to disperse them. A candle light march was carried out in Delhi but police again used water canons to force the protesters to turn back.
