New Delhi:

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over the controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC) for misleading the country, calling them "Ramu aur Shyamu".

"Modi ji talks as if he has never heard of the NRC, but his Home Minister said in Parliament that the NRC will be implemented in the entire country", said Chowdhury, adding, "Ye Ramu aur Shyamu kya kehte hain, kya nahi kehte hain ispe humko dhyan dena padega kyonki yeh gumrah ke master hain (Whatever these Ramu and Shyamu say should be heard carefully, they are experts in misleading the country).”

Modi at a rally from Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan had accused the Opposition of stoking violence in the name of protests against the new amended Citizenship Law. He had added that the NRC has nothing to do with Indian Muslims.

In an interview with News Agency ANI on Tuesday, Shah said there was no need to debate on the pan-India NRC as there was no discussion on it right now. He added that Modi was right when he had said that there was no discussion on it yet -- either in the Cabinet or Parliament.

Earlier, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had sparked a controversy by calling Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman "Nirbala" (weak) in Lok Sabha. "I have respect for you, but at times, I think that instead of Nirmala Sitharaman, whether it would be appropriate to call you 'Nirbala' Sitharaman. You are a minister, but do you speak your mind," Chowdhury had asked in the Lower House of Parliament.
