Former bureaucrat Shaktikanta Das on Tuesday was appointed the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Das, who retired as Economic Affairs Secretary in May 2017, has been appointed for a term of three years. He replaces Urjit Patel, who surprisingly resigned from the central bank Monday. Das had supported the Modi's demonetisation move, claiming that it would help reduce unaccounted wealth in the economy, bring down the problem of counterfeit money and help push digital payments.

# Shaktikanta Das, 63, was a member of the 15th Finance Commission of India, and India's Sherpa to G-20.
# Das is a retired 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.
# During his career as an IAS officer, he served in various capacities for Indian and Tamil Nadu governments, including as Economic Affairs
Secretary of India, Revenue Secretary of India, Fertilizers Secretary of India.
# Das served in various positions for both the government of India and the government of Tamil Nadu.
Das also had a stint with Mahindra Industrial Park Ltd (Mahindra World City), on deputation to a private sector company under Rule 6(2)(ii) of the Indian Administrative Service (Cadre) Rules, 1954.
# Das was appointed as Union Revenue Secretary by the prime minister led-Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in June 2014, he assumed the office of Secretary on 16 June 2014, and demitted it on August 31, 2015.
# Das was appointed as Union Economic Affairs Secretary by ACC in August 2016, he assumed the office of Secretary on August 31, 2016,and admitted it and simultaneously superannuated from service on May 28, 2017, after being given a three-month extension by the government.
# During his tenure as Union Economic Affairs Secretary, Das was widely regarded as one of the most powerful people in India.
