New Delhi:

Soaring temperatures make us feel weak many a times and we don't feel like doing anything. But have you ever thought that when it is uncomfortably hot, we can turn moody, and also less helpful or 'pro-social'. Well a new research claims that uncomfortably hot temperature make us feel moody and unhelpful.

The study helps to explain how and through what mechanisms temperature of the surroundings affects individual helping.

“The point of our study is that ambient temperature affects individual states that shape emotional and behavioural reactions, so people help less in an uncomfortable environment,” said Liuba Belkin, Associate Professor of Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, US.

For part one of the study, data provided by a large Russian retail chain, allowed the authors find out the differences in individual behaviour under hot versus normal temperature conditions.

According to the data, clerks who worked in an uncomfortably hot environment, were less likely to participate in pro-social behaviour that included coming forward to help customers, listening with attention and making suggestions.

According to the randomised online experiment results, only 34 per cent of the clerks were willing to volunteer for for help in the uncomfortably hot conditions compared to the 76 per cent of the participants in the closed group.

This revealed that mere recollection of being uncomfortably hot made a person less likely to be helpful.
