PV Sindhu lost 21-19, 19-21, 18-21 to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the semi-finals of ongoing All England Badminton Championships.
This was the first time that Sindhu had come so far in the tournament after a nail-biting match against 2016 champion Nozomi Okuhara, another Japanese. She defeated the Japanese 20-22, 21-18, 21-18 in a battle that lasted an hour and 24 minutes.
The current World No. 6 Sindhu, started the first game brightly but seemed to lost all her focus by the end of the game. She won the first game nevertheless, credits to some beautiful drop shots.
World No. 7 Yamaguchi relied on long rallies and tried to tire Sindhu out. After losing the first game 21-19, the Japanese was quick to cut off her mistakes as she won the second game 19-21. All the games went to the wire but it was the Japanese who came out with flying colours.
Sindhu had a lead of 18-17 during the final game but squandered her lead and Yamaguchi took the game from there. The gutsy performance by the Japanese, who was once six points down during the final game was squared off by some nervy unforced errors by PV Sindhu.
Akane Yamaguchi will now face World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying in the finals of All England Badminton Championships on Sunday.
