Earthquake: 6.6-magnitude quake hits Russia's Kamchatka

Earthquake in Russia: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck in the sea off eastern Russia on Tuesday (June 25), the US Geological Survey said. The epicentre of the quake was 152 km (94 miles) northwest of Nikol’skoye, Komandorskiye Ostrova, at a depth of about 33 km, the USGS said. 

An earthquake of this magnitude is considered to be strong. According to the USGS, it is possible that this earthquake could trigger a tsunami. Authorities, however, have not issued tsunami following the quake.

On Monday, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck in a remote area of Indonesia in the Banda Sea, the USGS said, but there were no initial tsunami warnings. The quake hit at a depth of 220 km (136 miles), the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury. 

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected after the quake, which was initially recorded with a magnitude of 7.2.
